Rapsody, Biggie and Cardi B on the same record? Yeah, I had to hear what that sounded like too.

For my “Ah Ha” DJ Smoke Remix, I brought three completely different styles together and let each artist do what they do best.

Rapsody brings the bars. Biggie brings that unmistakable Biggie flow. Cardi B comes in with a completely different energy. On paper it might look like a strange combination, but once I started putting the record together, it made sense.

This is exactly the type of stuff I still love about mixtapes. You don’t always need the obvious combination. Sometimes the fun is hearing artists together that you probably would have never gotten on the same record otherwise.

Rapsody Sets It Off

I put Rapsody first because her verse gives the remix a strong start without giving away everything immediately.

She’s one of those rappers where you actually have to listen to what she’s saying. Her delivery gives the beginning of the remix that straight-bars feel before everything switches up.

And that’s really what I wanted from this version. I didn’t want three verses that sounded like they came from the same rapper. I wanted each section to change the feel of the record.

Then Biggie Comes In

Once Biggie comes in, the record takes another turn.

There aren’t too many voices in hip-hop you can mistake for somebody else, and Biggie is one of them. The flow, the confidence and the way he sits on a beat gives the middle of the remix its own identity.

That’s also where the mixtape side of this really kicks in for me. One minute you’re listening to Rapsody, then you’re hearing Biggie on the same record, and somehow it still connects.

Cardi B Brings It Home

Then Cardi B gives the remix another change of pace.

By the time her section comes in, you’ve already heard two completely different approaches to the record. Cardi brings her own personality and makes the last part feel different again.

That’s what I liked most about putting this together. Everybody sounds like themselves.

I’m not trying to make Rapsody sound like Cardi, Cardi sound like Biggie or Biggie sound like anybody else. The whole point is hearing how three very different rappers work when a DJ puts the pieces together.

This Is What I Mean When I Say DJ Remix

I grew up on the era when DJs were constantly making alternate versions of records.

New verses. Different artists. Extended versions. Blend tapes. Freestyles. Records you couldn’t hear anywhere else.

That’s the lane I’m getting back into with these DJ Smoke remixes.

Instead of just playing the records everybody already has, I want to give people versions that are connected to DJ Smoke and Smoked Out Radio.

“Ah Ha” is one of those records.
